The most common type of optical soundtrack used in motion pictures. The variable area track is a transparent line in a black background. The relative width of the transparent part is varied in accordance with the sound waveform. Most movie soundtracks today consist of two parallel variable area tracks, making possible the recording of stereophonic sound. See SVA.
