Root

The lowest note of an uninverited chord, and therefore the note which usually gives the chord its name. For example, in a triad, it is the lowest note when the chord is arranged as two thirds on top of one another: C is the root of the chord of C (C, E, and G), an arrangement known as root position. If the root is not the lowest note, the triad is said to be inverted.
