In magnetic tape recording, the hysteresis inherent in the process of magnetizing the tape represents a large nonlinearity, and this causes harmonic distortion. The use of bias in the recording process reduces the effect of the hysteresis, and hence, reduces the distortion. Compare with Barkhausen effect.
