The splitting-up of a complex sound wave into separate frequency bands as the original wave passes from one elastic medium into another, e.g., from air into water. Similarly, a prism disperses white light into the familiar rainbow of colors, bending the shortest wavelengths (violet) the least, and longest (red) most. See diffraction.
