An early electronic instrument which used heterodyning by one fixed RF oscillator which was modulated by a hand and an antenna. Audio-range frequencies were produced by the sum and difference signals from this modulation, making the Thérémin a predecessor to modern FM synthesis. The instrument was monophonic and almost uncontrollably microtonal.
