The trade nametradename of one of the earliest commercially available computer music instruments, implementing a type of FM synthesis. Sequencing and monophonic sampling facilities (at a sampling rate of 50kHz) were soon added. The sampler was expanded into a full hard-disk recording unit which coined the name Direct-to-Disk. Towards the end of its development, a Synclavier was an integrated system with ninety-six voices, sequencing, and multitrack hard-disk recording, aimed at post-production and other professional users.
