Secure Digital Music Initiative. A working group formed by the RIAA to develop a “voluntary” method for protecting music copyright protection on the internet. SDMI is backed by the major labels, the aim of which is to simultaneously legitimize the distribution of music, while protecting copyright holders. There is an approximate analog in the UK with the name (Government’s) Creative Industries Taskforce (CIT).
